Ok, so GH kind of sucks right now. And by sucks I mean it's horrendous to watch. Now, I can appreciate parts of it, but really. So, here's my plan to fix the show.
- First, get rid of the mob. Not entirely, but it's SO FOCUSED on the mob. For 2 years now, they have tried to avoid a mob war. Fine. But why not actually have it. Kill off the Zaccharas (ok, Anthony and Johnny...I actually like Claudia) and the Karpovs. Keep Sonny, but have him reformed through the death of Jason. Alternatively, have Jason get his memory of being a Quartermaine come back and redeem Sonny this way. The mob has always been a part of Port Charles because well, it's a port. Easy trafficking. I have no problem with the mob, but it needs to end. Plus, a mob war is the perfect summer story. Start it in June, end it in September. The fallout would be great.
- Next, bring back the Quartermaines. This ain't hard. Have Jason get his memory back. Bring Emily back by saying that she wasn't really dead (neither was Georgie). See, Alcazar found out what happened to his son (because Lorenzo is still alive) and Skye begged him to intervene. So he used his HUGE fortune and vast resources to save Georgie and Emily. Hey, if Days could bring back Jack 3 times including once after donating his organs, then Georgie and Emily can come back. Put Tracy and Edward in a war over ELQ. Have Monica thrown in for good measure (as Alan's widow). It works.
- The hospital should be front and center. So, bring back the Nurses' Ball. Give Bobbie a freakin' storyline. Have a medical outbreak (the meningitis outbreak a few years ago was BRILLIANT). Maybe instead of having everyone running around trying to find out about the counterfeit drugs, use it as away to bring Sam and Lucky to the altar. Seriously, they have HUGE chemistry and it's being wasted. Because they still kind of want Liz and Lucky to be together. Also, Sam deserves a huge splashy wedding. And I think Luke would love the idea of Lucky marrying a scam artist very much like Luke
- Spinelli needs to go. He's occasionally good for a few laughs, but mostly, no. He's annoying. His nicknames suck and on top of that, he's lasted way beyond his original purpose which was to bring down Alcazar. So get rid of him already. Have him killed off during the mob war.
- Get Patrick and Robin married already. Then have him cheat with Layla. She's a wonderful actress and she could use a front-burner story.
- BRING BACK LAURA. Look, you already have her waking up this week to help Lulu. Keep her around. Redeem Scott by having him explain everything to Laura and apologize. Then, she forgives him, he leaves town and she gets to stay in PC. She can find out about Tracy and Luke. That's a good month of story right there. Then have her become the matriarch she should have been.
So there's my plan. I think it would take 2 years to do it right, 1 if it were rushed. Oh, and get Carly to shut the fuck up. PLEASE.
It truly amazes me how easy it has been to pack my shit. I hadn't realized that I didn't have as much stuff as I thought I did. Does that make sense. I mean, I found boxes in my closet that I haven't opened since I moved to this apartment 5 years ago. I mean, literally. 5 years, this stuff has been stuck in a box.
Like, my bowling pin. My dad used to be friends with a woman who owned a bowling alley and she gave my siblings and I a bowling pin each. My sister always knew where hers was, but I couldn't find it after we moved here. Then, tonight, as I was half-watching General Hospital, I found the damn thing. Along with some random papers. Anyway, I managed to pull out 2 bags of trash, 1 bag of clothes for Goodwill, and all the while emptying 3 boxes and re-packing one of them (all of my DVDs fit (barely) in one box).
Unfortunately, I still have to actually CLEAN the room, too, not just pack it. If it were me, I'd leave the carpet nasty anyway (the complex always re-carpets when people leave), but I know my mother and she'll want to leave the place the way we found it (smelling of crack smoke and dirt? No, just bare and with clean carpets).
Just felt the need to share my awe at the mighty wonder that is packing up your shit to get the hell out of Dodge.
So, the bigwigs at ABC decided to do another spin-off of General Hospital. Great. Love the idea that it's weekly and involves the same characters as GH, but the execution of the show? Kind of lacking.
The first problem is that, while it has the same characters, the storylines don't flow from the mother show to the Night Shift. First, Spinelli is so not in love with Lulu on NS, and Jason is walking around a free man, while on GH is charged with the murder of Lorenzo Alcazar. And they don't even mention why he's walking around a free man. Plus, there's Billy Dee Williams as some sort of custodian meandering about the hospital dropping insipid bon mots that really aren't necessary. When they announced him joining the staff, I'd have though they would have put him in a better role.
The other problem, is that since it's a weekly show and not a daily show, I'd expect the storylines to move a little faster. But Spinelli spent the entire episode being treated for a gunshot wound. That doesn't happen on any other sort of medical drama. Plus Patrick and Robin spent the entire shift whining about each other.
Of course, the comparison to the other spin-off has to be made. Port Charles was a weird little show. It was supposed to be about the new class of interns or something at General Hospital, but it took a turn toward the supernatural with all sorts of angels and vampires. Like Night Shift, Port Charles supposedly took place in the same town as the mother show, but you really couldn't tell from watching the show. Sure, characters from both shows were in and out of GH and Kelly's, but they were never around at the same time. Like, you'd never see Luke run into Livvie at Kelly's, even though they were supposedly living in the same town.
While I can see where ABC and the General Hospital staff were going with this spin-off and in general, I do think it's a good idea, I just don't think that it really works as well as it should. They should have had the storylines intertwine with the mother show just a little more, or they should have completely removed all the characters from GH and transplanted them to NS.
Gotta love the soaps
